Representation in education matters. And I don’t think we talk enough about what it means for Black kids to actually SEE Black men standing at the front of a classroom.For some of our students, a Black male teacher may be the first Black man they’ve ever seen in a professional role outside of their own family. He may be the first person who makes a little Black boy think, “I could do that too.”
And for our Black girls, it matters too. There is something powerful about them getting to experience Black men who are patient with them. Who encourage them. Who hold them accountable. Who protect their potential. Who are intelligent, compassionate, consistent, and genuinely invested in seeing them win.
That representation teaches something that will never show up on a lesson plan.
Sometimes who is standing at the front of the classroom matters just as much as what they’re teaching.
